Global Food Crisis Looms Amidst Rising Conflicts and Climate Shocks

The world stands at a critical juncture, facing a potential "war of hunger" driven by escalating conflicts and compounding global crises. While nations prioritize military spending, the underlying causes of conflict, the desire for resource control and territorial acquisition, are often overshadowed. This neglect is fueling widespread food insecurity, a phenomenon that has historically accompanied major global conflagrations.

A 2026 UN report on global hunger reveals a stark reality: in 2025, 645 million people, or 7.8% of the world's population, suffered from hunger. This marks a significant increase of 61 million people compared to 2019, meaning one in three individuals lacks access to healthy food sources. The report warns of a looming food price crisis, with current global conflicts, intensifying trade tensions, and the widespread use of economic sanctions severely disrupting global supply chains.

Compounding these issues are significant disruptions in the supply of fertilizers and increasingly severe climate shocks. Experts caution that these factors could trigger uncontrollable increases in food prices, impacting even wealthy nations. The United Nations Security Council recently convened a high-level debate on "Food as a Weapon," addressing the role of the Security Council in mitigating global and local food crises.

Romania has taken a firm stance, asserting that hunger must never be accepted as an inevitable consequence of conflict or used as a weapon. The country continues its role as a vital transit point for Ukrainian grain exports, facilitating shipments through Constanța and other routes. This commitment to global food security, particularly for the most vulnerable, remains a consistent and crucial aspect of Romania's foreign policy.
