Global Outcry Over Ben Gvir's Video Showing Mistreatment of Flotilla Activists

The international community has voiced outrage following the provocative social media post by Israeli Minister Itamar Ben-Gvir, which showcased the mistreatment of detained activists aboard the Global Sumud Flotilla 2.0.

Whatever opinion one may have of this flotilla – and we have repeatedly expressed our disagreement with this initiative – our nationals who participate in it must be treated with respect and released as soon as possible.

Nations including France, Ireland, the Netherlands, Germany, the United Kingdom, and Greece have issued strong condemnations, demanding the swift release of the activists. French Foreign Minister Jean-Noel Barrot summoned the Israeli ambassador to express France's "anger" and seek an explanation, emphasizing that participants, regardless of opinions on the flotilla itself, deserve respectful treatment and immediate liberation.

I was shocked and appalled by the video footage posted by Ben Gvir, where detained participants of the Global Sumud Flotilla, including Irish citizens, were not treated with dignity or respect at all.

Ireland's Minister for Foreign Affairs, Helen McEntee, echoed these sentiments, expressing shock at the video and demanding assurances for the welfare of Irish citizens involved, stressing their right to dignity and respect under international law. The Netherlands' Minister for Foreign Affairs, Tom Berendsen, labeled the treatment as "shocking and unacceptable," violating basic human dignity, and also summoned the Israeli ambassador.

The treatment of these detainees violates basic human dignity. I have conveyed this directly to my Israeli counterpart, Gideon Sa'ar, and will summon the Israeli ambassador.

Germany and the UK similarly condemned the actions, with Germany's Ambassador to Israel calling the treatment "completely unacceptable" and contrary to fundamental values. The video depicted activists kneeling with their hands bound, detained by Israeli security forces, a scene that has sparked widespread international criticism and calls for accountability.

It is good to hear many Israeli voices – including that of the foreign minister – calling out clearly the treatment by Minister Ben Gvir of the detainees: completely unacceptable and not in line with the fundamental values of our country.
