Go, Mollie, Go! A Hamster Spins the Wheel

On the sports platform Strava, where human athletes meticulously log their runs, a new contender has emerged: Mollie, a hamster whose athletic feats are leaving many amateur runners in the dust.

Mollie's owner, Thijs de Buck, a hobby jogger himself, has engineered a unique system for his pet. He developed a device that measures Mollie's pace and distance as the hamster runs on its wheel each night. This data is then automatically uploaded to Strava, creating a profile for the tiny athlete.

At just ten months old, Mollie has been active on Strava for nearly a month, showcasing remarkable fitness. The hamster runs nightly, covering an average of 10 kilometers. De Buck describes Mollie's routine as a form of interval training, with sprints interspersed with brief breaks for food and water. Mollie can reach peak speeds of approximately 5 km/h with its short legs.

Mollie's dedication to fitness is evident in its Strava challenge participation. The hamster quickly met the August challenge of "Run 400 minutes in August" within two days, and also completed the "Run 100 km in August" challenge with ease, given its nightly runs of four to five hours.

De Buck's project raises the question of motivation: why does Mollie run? Is it seeking enlightenment, dreaming of open fields, or simply running because it's in its nature? While Mollie cannot articulate its purpose, its athletic achievements are undeniably impressive, potentially sparking a new trend of documenting and sharing animal athletic endeavors online.
