Lionel Messi has turned the debate over football’s greatest player into a mock receipt. A new Instagram post lists his Argentina career as if it were a bill, with goals, assists, minutes and major honors itemized line by line.

The campaign highlights Argentina’s 2022 FIFA World Cup triumph, multiple Copa America titles, an Olympic gold medal and the Finalissima. It also points to the millions of fans Messi has inspired while representing his country. Where a normal receipt might show a subtotal or tip, Messi’s version ends with the words “GOAT debate-settled.”

The post appeared after Messi decided to retire from international football, adding a final flourish to the public image of an Argentina captain whose national-team career included both long disappointment and major victories. He had previously announced his retirement in 2016 after Argentina lost the Copa America final to Chile, but reversed that decision.

Messi later helped Argentina end a 28-year title drought by winning the Copa America in 2021. He then won the 2024 edition after Argentina’s World Cup victory in Qatar in 2022. In the World Cup final, Argentina beat France in a penalty shootout after the match ended 3-3 in regulation time. Messi scored twice and converted a penalty in the match.

The campaign also cites his World Cup record. Messi appeared in six tournaments from 2006 to 2026, scoring 21 goals in 34 matches. He is listed as the tournament’s second-highest scorer, behind France’s Kylian Mbappe, who has 22. At this year’s World Cup, Messi recorded eight goals and four assists, including his first World Cup hat-trick, against Algeria.
