Golden Yellow Disease Devastates Hungarian Vineyards, Threatening Wine Production

Hungary's renowned wine regions are facing a severe threat from a golden yellow disease that is rapidly destroying vineyards. The situation is particularly dire in western and southwestern Transdanubia, the Somló wine region, and alarmingly, has now reached epidemic proportions in Tokaj-Hegyalja.

Molnár Ákos, president of the viticulture section of the National Council of Grape Growers, expressed grave concern over the disease's relentless advance. He noted that while procedural modifications aimed at simplifying responses were approved in late July, the pace of these measures is insufficient to combat the rapid spread of the infection. Last year saw a significant number of infections, the consequences of which are starkly visible this year.

The disease's impact is described as dramatic in certain areas. Its presence has been a persistent issue in the western and southwestern parts of Transdanubia and around Lake Balaton, as well as in Somló. The new and deeply troubling development is its widespread outbreak in Tokaj-Hegyalja, a region historically celebrated for its high-quality wines.

The urgency of the situation is underscored by the fact that the implemented measures are not keeping pace with the disease's proliferation. This lag threatens the livelihoods of winemakers and the future of Hungary's celebrated wine heritage.

The simpler procedure modifications were adopted at the end of July, so we are moving forward, just not at the pace the disease is spreading. Unfortunately, there were a very large number of infections last year, the 'result' of which is visible this year, and as we travel through the wine regions, the situation is dramatic in certain places. In the western, southwestern part of Transdanubia, on the shores of Lake Balaton, in Somló, and what is new and very painful is that the infection has now reached epidemic proportions in Tokaj-Hegyalja.
