Gombe ASUU threatens indefinite strike over unmet demands

The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) at Gombe State University is poised to launch an indefinite strike if its demands are not met by the state government within two weeks. The union's branch chairperson, Mustapha Muhammad, and secretary, Aliyu Shelleng, announced the decision following a congress meeting and a report from the National Executive Council (NEC).

The NEC had reviewed outstanding issues between the university's academic staff and the state government, directing the branch to prepare for industrial action. The congress resolved to commence a "total, comprehensive and indefinite action" if the grievances remain unresolved after the 14-day ultimatum, which began on Tuesday, August 11, 2026.

The union urged the university community to be aware of the potential disruption to academic activities. They called on relevant authorities to use the 14-day window to address the outstanding issues and avert the strike, emphasizing that the action would only proceed if the problems persist.
