Gombe gov unveils anti-terror campaign, says insecurity biggest threat to North

Gombe State Governor, Muhammadu Yahaya, has launched a statewide "Unite Against Terror" campaign, calling for collective action against terrorism and criminality. In a broadcast marking the campaign's launch, Yahaya stressed that security is a shared responsibility, urging residents to remain vigilant and report any suspicious movements or activities to security agencies.

Security is everyone’s responsibility. The government and security agencies cannot do it alone. If you see something, say something. If you notice any suspicious movement, unusual gathering or activities that threaten the peace and security of your community, report them promptly to the appropriate security agencies

Governor Yahaya described insecurity as the most significant threat confronting Northern Nigeria, emphasizing a direct link between peace and development. "Without security, there can be no development, and without development, there can be no lasting peace," he stated. He commended the dedication and sacrifices of Nigerian security agencies, including the Armed Forces, Police, DSS, and Civil Defence Corps, paying special tribute to those who lost their lives in the line of duty.

Since assuming office in 2019, Yahaya highlighted his administration's security initiatives, which have helped maintain Gombe as one of Nigeria's most peaceful states, despite its proximity to insurgency-affected areas in the North-East. These initiatives include establishing a Ministry of Internal Security, creating the Gombe State Security, Traffic and Environmental Corps, launching "Operation Hattara," strengthening local vigilante groups, equipping security agencies, and setting up local peace committees.

As Chairman of the Northern States Governors' Forum, Yahaya has also championed the establishment of the Northern States Security Trust Fund. This fund aims to enable states to pool resources for tackling insecurity more effectively, acknowledging the challenges posed by porous borders and the need for collaborative solutions.
