Troops rescue 10 of 11 abducted NECO candidates after ISWAP attack in Borno

Troops operating under Operation HADIN KAI have successfully rescued 10 National Examinations Council (NECO) candidates and their teachers who were abducted by suspected Islamic State West Africa Province (ISWAP) terrorists. The incident occurred in Lassa Community, Askira/Uba Local Government Area of Borno State, as students were taking their NECO examinations.

The attack took place around 9 a.m. The Theatre Command responded swiftly by launching a coordinated search-and-rescue operation involving ground troops, strike aircraft, and Intelligence, Surveillance, and Reconnaissance (ISR) platforms. The troops pursued the fleeing terrorists to the Daggu area, engaging them in a significant firefight. Guided by aerial surveillance, the troops managed to rescue 10 victims unharmed.

Despite the successful rescue of the majority of the abductees, the operation was not without cost. One soldier from Operation HADIN KAI and a member of the Civilian Joint Task Force (CJTF) lost their lives during the engagement. Efforts are ongoing to locate and rescue the remaining abducted victim and to apprehend the perpetrators. The military also recovered seven motorcycles used by the terrorists during their escape, indicating a disruption of their operations.

The military statement highlighted that this incident underscores the desperation of terrorist groups facing sustained pressure from counterterrorism efforts. These groups are increasingly targeting soft civilian targets. The military reaffirmed its commitment to dismantling terrorist networks and restoring peace in the North-East, urging the public to remain vigilant and provide credible intelligence.
