Google announces second phase of digital port in Dominican Republic with two new submarine cables

The Dominican Republic is solidifying its role as a regional technology and digital hub with Google's expansion of its digital exchange port. Minister of the Presidency José Ignacio Paliza announced the deployment of two new submarine cables, Alisios and Canoa, which will complement the previously announced Olaluz cable.

The Alisios cable is set to connect the Dominican Republic with the United States, Europe, and South America. The Canoa cable will further expand the country's international links and reinforce its connections to other key points in the regional digital infrastructure. These developments were announced during the 41st Annual Conference and Exhibition of the Caribbean Association of National Telecommunications Organizations (CANTO).

Minister Paliza stated that these investments are significant for the country, bolstering its capacity to engage with global digital economy trends. He highlighted that Google's commitment to the nation's digital infrastructure strengthens connectivity and prepares the Dominican Republic for greater participation in global economic trends. This initiative is part of a broader effort to enhance Dominican technological infrastructure, including investments in connectivity, artificial intelligence, and data centers.

Cristian Ramos, Google's Director of Global Infrastructure, acknowledged the Dominican Republic's strategic geographic position and infrastructure conditions as favorable for new connectivity projects. He noted that Google has announced three submarine cables linked to the Dominican Republic in the past five months, underscoring the country's strategic importance to the company's global infrastructure. Both Ramos and Paliza emphasized the importance of international collaboration and private investment in diversifying and modernizing the national economy.
