Google Assistant Retired on Android Devices September 4, Gemini Takes Over

Google is officially retiring Google Assistant on Android mobile devices, with the transition to its successor, Gemini, beginning September 4, 2026. This marks the end of an era for the voice assistant that has been a staple on Android devices for over a decade since its launch in May 2016.

Starting September 4, we will begin removing access to Google Assistant on Android phones and tablets, and its paired devices.

Following the September deadline, users will lose access to Google Assistant on their Android phones, tablets, and paired devices like smartwatches and headphones. The company has stated that this transition process will take several weeks to complete. Once a device loses eligibility, users will be unable to revert to Google Assistant, regardless of whether they are using their phone, tablet, or connected accessories.

While Google had previously offered flexibility, allowing Android users to choose between Gemini and Google Assistant in settings, this option will be removed. From September onwards, Gemini will be the mandatory voice assistant for Android mobile users. This change extends beyond phones and tablets to include Wear OS smartwatches, headphones, and Android Auto systems connected via Android phones.

Once your mobile device loses eligibility, you will no longer be able to use Google Assistant, nor will you be able to switch back to Google Assistant, whether on your phone, tablet, or paired devices.

However, Google has outlined specific exceptions. Devices that do not meet Gemini's minimum hardware requirements, such as running an OS version older than Android 9, having less than 2GB of RAM, or being in a region where Gemini is not yet supported, may continue to use Google Assistant temporarily. Additionally, vehicles with Google built-in systems and Google Home smart home devices, along with Google TV, will not be affected by this immediate change, though Gemini is slated to take over these platforms in the future.

If your device does not meet the minimum hardware requirements for Gemini, such as having a system version lower than Android 9, less than 2GB of memory, or if your country or region does not yet support Gemini, you can temporarily continue to use Google Assistant.
