Google Images gets major 25th-anniversary redesign with AI image generation

Google Images is marking its 25th anniversary with a major overhaul, introducing a redesigned homepage and integrating AI-powered image generation directly into Google Search. Since its launch in 2001, Google Images has evolved from a simple text-based search tool into a platform that helps users understand the world visually.

The revamped Google Images homepage abandons the traditional single search box for a more dynamic, browseable gallery. This new design presents a continuously updated stream of images from the web, aiming to provide users with creative inspiration and discovery. Tech media have compared the browsing experience to that of Pinterest, allowing users to scroll through diverse visuals and discover new ideas. The platform will also offer personalized image recommendations based on user interests and integrate with Collections, enabling users to save and organize inspiration for various themes like design, travel, or home decor.

In addition to the homepage redesign, Google is embedding AI image generation capabilities into its AI Overviews feature within Google Search. This new functionality allows users to create custom images by simply typing a text description. For instance, if a user needs an image for a specific home design, event poster, or product concept that isn't readily available online, Google can now generate high-quality, tailored visuals using its latest Nano Banana AI model. This feature bridges the gap between textual ideas and visual content, eliminating the need for separate AI drawing tools.

Both the new homepage experience and the AI image generation feature are set to roll out in the coming weeks, initially in the United States for the desktop version with English language support. Users will need to be logged into their Google accounts to access these features. The AI image generation capability will gradually expand to regions that currently support AI Mode image creation.
