Google's Gemini App Surpasses 1 Billion Monthly Users

Google's Gemini app has achieved a significant milestone, crossing the 1 billion monthly active users mark. CEO Sundar Pichai announced the achievement, highlighting it as the fastest-growing product in Google's history and the 14th product from the company to reach this user base. Official figures reveal that voice commands drive 63% of Gemini interactions. Notably, one in five Gemini Live sessions now incorporate camera or screen sharing, indicating a shift towards more interactive usage beyond voice alone. Students are particularly engaged with file uploads, with 38% of their school-related requests including attachments. Google also reported that the Gemini app generates over 150 million images daily and can automate tasks across more than 40 applications. On Apple devices, the app has garnered over 100 million monthly active users on iOS, and Mac users engage with Gemini approximately twice as frequently as users on other platforms. This achievement positions the standalone Gemini app as a strong competitor to OpenAI's ChatGPT, which reported reaching 1 billion monthly active users in June. Google's reported figure specifically pertains to the Gemini app, excluding users who access Gemini through other Google products like AI Mode in Search, which itself has exceeded 1 billion monthly active users. The announcement comes shortly after Google's second-quarter earnings call, where the company noted Gemini's user base at over 950 million monthly users and a tripling of daily active users over the past year. Further Gemini-powered features are anticipated for Pixel devices at the upcoming Made by Google event on August 12.
