Gooikoorts Festival Remains Smoke-Free This Year

For the second consecutive year, the Gooikoorts folk festival in Gooik will enforce a strict no-smoking policy. Organizers are committed to maintaining the festival's status as a smoke-free environment, a policy that was successfully introduced last year and received positive feedback.

We have nothing against smokers, people should be able to do as they please. But it can be disturbing in a semi-open tent where children are also present and where you can have a drink.

Filip Verneert, an organizer, explained the initial internal discussions about the policy, acknowledging potential resistance due to it affecting public space. However, he emphasized that the aim is not to restrict smokers but to prevent disruption in semi-open tents, especially where children are present and people are dining or drinking.

Last year's implementation of the smoke-free rule was well-received, even by smokers, who reportedly showed understanding. The festival has designated a comfortable smoking area to accommodate attendees who smoke. This commitment to a smoke-free environment continues for the upcoming festival.

It was well received, also by the smokers themselves. They had a lot of understanding for it. We also made a cozy smoking area on the festival grounds. And this year we are sticking to that smoking ban.

Verneert also highlighted that the festival, scheduled for July 3, 4, and 5, will maintain its warm, family-friendly atmosphere with diverse entertainment. Ticket prices are accessible, with discounts for those on a budget, and camping and parking are free. Gooikoorts is also prioritizing sustainability by avoiding plastic cups and offering local products from the Pajottenland region, including beer, cheese, and fruit juices.

Regarding the music and atmosphere, we are continuing in the same vein. Gooikoorts is a warm, family festival with a lot of side entertainment. We want to be accessible to everyone.
