Gordie Howe bridge now open to pedestrians, cyclists

Following its opening to vehicular traffic last week, the Gordie Howe International Bridge has now welcomed pedestrians and cyclists, allowing them to cross the border on foot or by bicycle. The newly constructed $6.4 billion bridge opened its multi-use pathway to travelers starting at 8 a.m. eastern time on Wednesday.

The Gordie Howe International Bridge Authority stated on its website that the number of people allowed on the pathway at any given time will be limited during the initial opening days to ensure smooth operations. The multi-use pathway is available free of charge to all users.

The number of people that can be on the path at any one time over the initial opening days will be limited to support smooth operations.

For those traveling by personal vehicle, a toll of $8 is required, with an additional $8 charge per trailer if applicable. Larger commercial or passenger vehicles, as well as hazardous or oversized vehicles, will face a toll of $12 per axle. Regardless of the mode of travel, all individuals using the bridge must possess the necessary travel documentation, as confirmed by the Canada Border Services Agency (CBSA).

The bridge, named after Canadian hockey legend Gordie Howe, saw its official opening ceremony on July 24. Cars, personal vehicles, and commercial trucks began crossing on July 27. The bridge is jointly owned by Canada and Michigan, with Canada fully funding its construction. Earlier this year, U.S. President Donald Trump had threatened to block the bridge's opening, demanding compensation and fair treatment from Canada. However, following negotiations, Housing and Infrastructure Minister Gregor Robertson and Michigan Governor Gretchen Whitmer announced the July 27 opening date after a new revenue-sharing agreement was reached.
