Gordie Howe bridge set to open to traffic after months of delays

After months of delays, the Gordie Howe International Bridge is finally opening to traffic on Monday, providing a crucial second road link between Michigan and Ontario. The much-anticipated infrastructure project is set to welcome travelers despite the ongoing and intensifying trade war between the United States and Canada.

Canadian officials held an opening ceremony on Friday, but the public can begin using the bridge starting at noon eastern time on Monday. The bridge's opening comes at a tense moment in U.S.-Canada relations, with U.S. President Donald Trump having previously threatened new 50 percent tariffs on Canadian goods. Trump had even threatened to block the bridge's opening until the U.S. felt adequately compensated and Canada demonstrated greater respect.

Named in honor of Canadian hockey legend Gordie Howe, who had a significant career with the Detroit Red Wings, the bridge represents a major collaborative effort. Housing and Infrastructure Minister Greg Robertson described the project as "more than just a bridge," calling it a testament to what can be achieved through cooperation. While Canada fully financed the construction, the bridge is a jointly owned entity between Canada and Michigan.

Travelers will face tolls for using the bridge, with fees set at $8 for personal vehicles and an additional $8 for trailers. Larger commercial or passenger vehicles, as well as those carrying hazardous or oversized loads, will be charged $12 per axle. Canada anticipates recovering the bridge's construction costs within 50 years through these tolls. Recent negotiations between Canadian and Michigan officials led to a new revenue-sharing agreement, paving the way for the July 27 opening.
