Government Announces $1 Million Community Fund to Fight Wilding Pines

The government has announced a new $1 million community fund aimed at tackling the proliferation of wilding pines across the country. This initiative, set to run over two years, will provide financial support for community-led projects focused on controlling these invasive conifers.

The fund will be administered through the National Wilding Conifer Control Programme. Farmers, volunteers, and local groups are encouraged to apply for grants to support their efforts in combating the spread of wilding pines, which are introduced conifers that reproduce through natural regeneration and encroach upon landscapes.

This new funding comes in addition to the existing $109 million allocated to the National Wilding Conifer Control Programme, highlighting a significant government commitment to addressing the environmental impact of these invasive species. The programme aims to protect native ecosystems and agricultural land from the detrimental effects of wilding pine encroachment.
