Government reviews maritime shipping system

Fiji's government is undertaking a comprehensive review of its maritime shipping system, aiming to improve essential services for its island communities. Ro Filipe Tuisawau, the Minister for Public Works and Transport, indicated that one significant option under consideration is the privatization of Government Shipping Services, transforming it into a state-owned enterprise.

This strategic review comes in the wake of recent disruptions that led to shortages of vital supplies in Taveuni and other remote island areas. The government acknowledges the critical need for reliable transportation to ensure these communities have consistent access to necessities.

The review will examine various aspects of the current system to identify inefficiencies and opportunities for enhancement. The ultimate goal is to establish a more robust and dependable shipping network that better serves the needs of all Fijian citizens, particularly those residing in the outer islands.
