Govt Admits Up to Seven Hours of Power Outages Daily

Pakistan is grappling with a severe electricity crisis, with Power Minister Awais Leghari admitting to 6-7 hours of daily load shedding, a figure nearly three times higher than the government's public commitment. This stark reality has left citizens enduring prolonged power outages, impacting daily life and economic activities across the country.

Every 500-600MW shortfall translates into one-hour load management and therefore the government was forced to have six to seven hours of average load management without any discrimination between urban and rural areas.

Minister Leghari attributed the shortfall, estimated at 3,400MW, to a confluence of factors beyond the government's immediate control. Disruptions to Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG) imports, exacerbated by the ongoing Middle East crisis, have severely hampered the supply of essential fuel for power generation. Compounding this issue is an unprecedented surge in electricity demand, which spiked from 9,000MW to 20,000MW within a matter of days due to unusual weather patterns.

In response, the government has implemented several measures to alleviate the crisis. Maintenance schedules for nuclear power plants have been postponed until July to maximize electricity generation. Furthermore, diplomatic channels are being actively utilized to secure alternative LNG supplies and divert local gas resources, while ensuring adequate provision for the fertilizer industry. Hydropower generation has also been boosted by increasing water discharges from dams.

Power shortfalls had been caused by disruptions to LNG imports due to the Middle East crisis and by lower provincial irrigation water requirements, both of which he said were beyond the government’s control.

From a Pakistani perspective, this power crisis underscores the nation's vulnerability to external factors and the challenges of maintaining energy security. The reliance on imported LNG, particularly in the context of regional instability, highlights the need for greater energy independence and diversification of sources. While the government assures that efforts are underway to manage the situation, the prolonged outages raise concerns about the long-term economic impact and the public's trust in the administration's ability to provide basic necessities. The equitable distribution of load shedding, as claimed by the minister, is a small comfort to citizens facing significant daily disruptions.
