Govt renews efforts to tackle alcohol abuse among youth

The Rwandan government is renewing its focus on curbing alcohol abuse among youth following a grim toll of deaths and vision impairments linked to illicit beverages. Since the start of 2026, at least 50 people have died from consuming these dangerous drinks, with more than 100 others developing serious vision problems, according to the Rwanda National Police.

These statistics underscore the severe public health crisis posed by unregulated alcohol. The government's renewed efforts aim to address the root causes of youth alcohol abuse and prevent further tragedies.
