Gravestones toppled in Romanian Jewish cemetery where Gantz's family is buried

A deeply disturbing act of vandalism has occurred at the Reghin Jewish Cemetery in Romania, where gravestones were toppled. This desecration is particularly poignant as the cemetery is the resting place of Blue and White party leader Benny Gantz’s great-grandfather. Fourteen monuments were displaced over Saturday night, though thankfully, they were not damaged.

Fourteen monuments at the Reghin Jewish Cemetery were pushed over and displaced over last Saturday night, the police told The Jerusalem Post on Thursday, but they were not damaged.

The Mures County Police Inspectorate was notified and is treating the incident with utmost seriousness, launching an investigation with the prosecutor’s office to identify and hold those responsible accountable. This act, occurring so close to Holocaust Remembrance Day, serves as a stark and painful reminder of the persistent nature of antisemitism.

The Mures County Police said that it “treats such acts with the utmost seriousness and carries out all necessary activities, in order to clarify the factual situation and hold the persons involved accountable.”

Benny Gantz shared on X/Twitter that he was informed of the incident by Romanian Ambassador to Israel Radu Ioanid. The ambassador assured Gantz that Romania's highest authorities are addressing the matter. Gantz rightly stated that the desecration of a Jewish cemetery demonstrates how antisemitism knows no bounds and has not faded with time. He issued a call to the international community to be uncompromising in its crackdown on Holocaust denial and modern-day antisemitism, a sentiment that resonates deeply in light of this abhorrent event.
