Greece Battles Deadly Crete Wildfires, Thousands Evacuated

Wildfires are raging across Greece, with the island of Crete particularly hard-hit, prompting the evacuation of approximately 8,000 people from popular tourist areas. The fires, fanned by winds reaching up to 120 kilometers per hour, threatened the resort village of Agia Galini. Despite the improving situation on Thursday, Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis warned of "difficult days ahead." The European Commission has pledged additional support to help Greece combat the escalating blazes. Hotelier Michalis Christoforakis reported that evacuated holidaymakers were returning to resorts, noting that while some were worried, there was no panic. Tragically, three firefighters lost their lives battling the fires. Two were trapped on a mountain road near Krya Vrysi on Crete, while a third collapsed and died during efforts to extinguish a separate fire in the Peloponnese peninsula. Austrian tourist Daniela Schmidt described the experience as "quite scary," recounting how her family watched the fire throughout the night and were initially unable to return to their hotel due to evacuation orders. They were eventually able to return the following day. The fires are believed to have destroyed homes, agricultural facilities, and farm animals, though the full extent of the damage is still being assessed as the situation remains ongoing.
