Greece Extends Housing Program Deadline, Supports Accessibility Initiatives

The Greek government, through Minister of Social Cohesion and Family Domna Michailidou, has reaffirmed its commitment to supporting young couples and individuals in acquiring their first homes via the "My Home II" program. Michailidou highlighted the program's significant success, with an 89% absorption rate and approximately 11,500 finalized contracts, underscoring its role as a vital housing policy tool. Crucially, in response to societal feedback and concerns raised by the Ombudsman, the government has extended the contract finalization deadline for eligible beneficiaries to August 31, 2026. This extension, funded by national resources via the Hellenic Development Bank, ensures that approximately 3,000 individuals who have progressed in the process are not penalized by administrative or market-related delays.

Those who have joined the program will have until the end of August to complete the contracting,” Michailidou pointed out.

Michailidou emphasized that no beneficiary who has followed the correct procedures will lose out on "My Home II" due to external delays. This corrective intervention demonstrates the government's responsiveness to citizens' needs and its dedication to ensuring the program's effective implementation. The deadline for new applications to the program remains May 31, 2026, requiring applicants to have identified a property and submitted necessary documentation by that date. This dual approach balances the need for program completion with the flexibility required to accommodate unforeseen circumstances.

Beyond housing, the Minister also shed light on the "Home Accessibility" program, which aims to improve the living conditions of people with disabilities. With over 1,945 beneficiaries already supported through funding for home modifications up to €14,500, the program is making tangible differences. Legislative measures are being introduced to address objective delays, particularly in the procurement of specialized equipment from abroad, such as stairlifts. This proactive approach ensures that beneficiaries are not hindered by external supply chain issues, reflecting a broader governmental effort to enhance accessibility and social inclusion across Greece.
