Greece Faces Peak Heatwave with Tropical Nights; Cooler Weather Expected Thursday

Greece is bracing for the peak of a significant heatwave, with temperatures expected to average 39 to 40 degrees Celsius across many regions starting Monday. Meteorologists predict that some inland areas, particularly the "hot basins" of continental Greece, could see temperatures soar to 42 or even 43 degrees Celsius.

Trikala is forecast to be the hottest city, potentially reaching 42-43 degrees, while Larissa, Lamia, Agrinio, and Argos could experience highs of 42 degrees. Athens will reach its peak on Tuesday and Wednesday, hitting the "psychological threshold" of 40 degrees. Thessaloniki will remain slightly cooler but experience intense discomfort due to high humidity.

Adding to the discomfort are the "tropical nights," where temperatures fail to drop below 20 degrees Celsius. In densely populated cities like Athens and Thessaloniki, nighttime temperatures may stay above 28 or 30 degrees until the early morning hours. This phenomenon, linked to the urban heat island effect where concrete and asphalt retain heat, prevents natural cooling and poses health risks, especially for vulnerable populations.

Relief is anticipated from Thursday, with a noticeable temperature drop of up to 10 degrees in some areas. This shift may bring rain and thunderstorms, potentially affecting Athens as well. In preparation, the Ministry of Climate Crisis and Civil Protection convened a risk assessment committee on Sunday to coordinate emergency services and ensure state readiness.
