Greece Faces Very High Fire Risk in Aegean Islands and Crete

Greece's Civil Protection agency has issued a severe warning, forecasting a very high risk of wildfires across several island regions and Crete for Tuesday, July 14. The danger level is set at Category 4, indicating extreme conditions conducive to rapid fire spread.

The affected areas include the regional units of Chios, Samos, and Ikaria in the North Aegean; Rhodes, Kalymnos, Kos, and Karpathos in the South Aegean; and Heraklion and Lasithi in Crete. A high fire risk (Category 3) is also anticipated in numerous other parts of the country.

In response, the Ministry of Climate Crisis and Civil Protection has placed all relevant services on heightened alert. Regional authorities and state bodies have been notified and are on standby for immediate firefighting operations. The ministry stressed that current weather conditions favor the swift escalation of any fires that ignite.

Citizens are strongly urged to exercise extreme caution and avoid any activities in the countryside that could inadvertently cause a fire. Particular attention is advised when using machinery that produces sparks, operating outdoor grills, tending to beehives, or discarding lit cigarettes. The burning of fields and crop residues remains prohibited throughout the fire season.

Authorities emphasize that protecting lives, property, and the environment is a collective responsibility. Adhering to preventive measures is highlighted as the most effective way to stop fires from starting. In case of spotting smoke or a fire, the public is instructed to immediately call the Fire Service at 199 or 112 and follow official guidance.
