Greece fines tourists up to 1,000 euros for taking pebbles from famous beach

Tourists seeking souvenirs from the picturesque Lalaria beach on the Greek island of Skiathos now face hefty fines. Authorities are implementing a strict policy, with penalties ranging from 400 to 1,000 euros for anyone caught taking the beach's unique pebbles, known locally as "lalaria."

The initiative, launched by the Skiathos Cultural Association in collaboration with Port Authorities, is titled "Take a photo, not a pebble – Save Lalaria beach." The campaign highlights the threat posed by human interference to the beach's centuries-old beauty. The unique pebbles, found only on this specific shore, are crucial to its distinctive landscape.

"Evidence has been found that the deterioration of the unique landscape is not, to a certain extent, caused by erosion," the cultural association stated on its website. The association notes that the beach's appearance has visibly degraded over the past decade, with some changes becoming irreversible. To combat this, warning signs have been erected on the beach, informing visitors about the fines for removing stones.

Efforts to protect Lalaria beach began as early as 2014, with renewed actions by the Cultural Association and Port Authorities to enforce the protective measures. Skiathos, a popular tourist destination in the northern Aegean Sea, is known for its numerous beaches and lush landscapes, but the preservation of natural sites like Lalaria is now a priority.
