Greece on High Alert for Fire Risk, Several Regions in "Red Code"

Greece is on high alert for a very high fire risk across numerous regions, with the General Secretariat for Civil Protection designating several areas as "Red Code." This mobilization, effective Saturday, August 15th, signifies a Category 4 fire risk.

The "Red Code" areas include Attica, and the Regional Units of Corinthia, Argolida, and Laconia, as well as Achaia and Ilia. High fire risk is also anticipated in parts of Central Greece, the Sporades, the North and South Aegean islands, Crete, Halkidiki, Mount Athos, and Eastern Macedonia and Thrace, including Samothrace.

Civil Protection has already alerted relevant services, regions, and municipalities to maintain a high state of readiness for potential fire incidents. Citizens are strongly advised to exercise extreme caution and avoid outdoor activities that could spark a fire, such as burning dry grass and branches, using tools that create sparks, operating outdoor grills, or discarding lit cigarettes.

The Fire Service remains on alert, supported by mixed patrols and aerial surveillance using drones and aircraft. Preventive measures, such as restricting vehicle access and visitor presence in forests, national parks, and other vulnerable areas, are under consideration. The public is urged to immediately report any fires to the Fire Service by calling 199.
