This surge places Greece behind only Portugal in terms of growth in American tourism. In 2025 alone, Americans made a record 24 million trips to Europe, signaling a strong return of transatlantic travel.

The impressive growth for Greece, approaching a 300% increase, is attributed to several factors. A significant rise in wealth among a portion of the American population has transformed international travel from a luxury into a lifestyle component. Older Americans, in particular, with substantial accumulated wealth, are driving this trend, often seeking experiences and extended travel due to increased life expectancy.

Furthermore, increased accessibility and the pervasive influence of social media have accelerated this phenomenon. Images of vacations and new destinations spread rapidly online, creating and amplifying travel trends. While this influx of American tourists provides a substantial economic boost to Greece and other European countries, it also raises concerns in some destinations about over-reliance on foreign visitors.
