Greece's Fire Service battles nearly 2,700 fires as heat persists

Greece's Fire Service is operating under heightened alert, having tackled at least 2,700 fires since the anti-fire season commenced, with meteorological conditions continuing to pose a significant risk. The service reported 40 rural and forest fires on August 13 alone, many in areas with very high or extreme fire danger.

Since August 1, over 500 fires have been recorded, bringing the total since the season began to nearly 2,700. Firefighting units remain deployed in areas affected by recent major fires, conducting patrols and addressing potential flare-ups. The service stressed that there is no room for complacency given the ongoing challenges.

Notable incidents included a fire on Kalamos island, which was quickly brought under control with ground and air support. Fires in Stratos, Agrinio, and Kavala were also promptly contained. In Acharnes, Attica, a fire in an extreme danger zone was met with a swift response involving 73 firefighters, canine units, 25 vehicles, and two helicopters, and has since been extinguished.

The most significant ongoing operation is a fire in a low-vegetation forest area in Sithonia, Halkidiki. This incident has seen a substantial reinforcement of forces, including 155 firefighters, canine units, 57 vehicles, and volunteers. Support from Moldova, comprising 12 firefighters and three vehicles, has arrived as part of a European pre-deployment program. Nine aircraft and seven helicopters have been involved in aerial firefighting efforts, coordinated by the Deputy Chief of the Fire Service. Regional and municipal machinery is also assisting in the operation.
