Greece Unveils Triple Support Package for Pensioners in 2026, Includes Special Provision for Widows

The Greek government is taking significant steps to bolster the financial security of its citizens, particularly pensioners and widows, through a comprehensive support package set to be implemented in 2026. This initiative underscores a commitment to social welfare and aims to address long-standing economic challenges faced by vulnerable populations.

The new measures include a permanent €300 benefit for widows whose sole income is a survivor's pension, available from age 60, and a similar €300 net benefit for pensioners over 65, disbursed annually in November. For couples, the benefit doubles to €600. These benefits are subject to new income and property criteria, ensuring they reach those most in need.

Furthermore, the government is introducing a rent return scheme for pensioners living in rented accommodation, providing an additional layer of financial relief. For instance, a pensioner paying €600 in rent could receive a total of €900 in November, combining the €300 benefit with the rent return.

Beyond direct financial aid, the package addresses workplace equality with new transparency rules. Businesses will be required to disclose data on gender pay gaps and bonus disparities, and ensure equal pay before hiring. This move signals a strong push towards closing the gender pay gap and fostering a more equitable labor market in Greece.
