Greek actor Giannis Dendrinos dies at 43

The Greek theater community is mourning the loss of actor Giannis Dendrinos, who passed away at the young age of 43.

His mother announced his death, sharing photos that traced his artistic journey. Friends and colleagues have shared heartfelt tributes, remembering Dendrinos for his talent, sensitivity, and generosity. "Giannis was a talented, sensitive, smiling, kind-hearted, giving soul," wrote Haris Tzortzakis, reflecting on their time together at the Athens Conservatory. "There are angels like Giannis in the theater world, but also monsters who don't care about anything or anyone." Nikos Orfanos recalled their collaboration on the play "Malli Kouvaria" (Hair in a Tangle) in the summer of 2023, describing Dendrinos as a person filled with joy, positive energy, and kindness.

Ο Γιάννης ήταν στο δεύτερο έτος του Ωδείου Αθηνών όταν εγώ ήμουν στο πρώτο. Ένα ταλαντούχο, ευαίσθητο, χαμογελαστό, καλόκαρδο, δοτικό πλάσμα. Στον χώρο του θεάτρου υπάρχουν άγγελοι σαν τον Γιάννη, αλλά και τέρατα που δεν υπολογίζουν τίποτα και κανέναν. Να μη νικήσουν τα τέρατα. Καλό ταξίδι, ρε Γιαννάκη. Μας τσάκισε το φευγιό σου.

Dendrinos was born in Athens in 1983 and held degrees from the Athens Conservatory's Drama School and Panteion University's Department of International and European Studies. He also studied classical singing and contemporary musical theater.

His extensive theater credits include performances in "Malli Kouvaria," "The Bear," "Rosemary's Baby," "A Thousand and One Stories," "Italian Night," "Oedipus Rex," "Peace," "The Travels of Gul-Iver," "Semolina," "Diabolada," "Pinocchio," "Discovering Howard Barker," "Animal Farm," and "Vivid Film/After the Foam...". He also appeared in the opera "L'inganno felice" by Rossini. In film, he was part of Menelaos Karamangiolli's "J.A.C.E.," and he appeared in the television series "Karyotakis."
