Greek Parliament Debates National Defense and Rearmament Plans

A broad discussion on national defense unfolded in the Hellenic Parliament, focusing on the government's rearmament plans. Minister of National Defense Mr. Inskipp delivered a lengthy address, outlining the administration's strategy for bolstering the nation's military capabilities.

According to the minister, the Greek navy is in a satisfactory state, both in terms of shipbuilding capacity and personnel readiness. He assured lawmakers that adequate measures are also being implemented for the army and the air force. War factories are operating at full capacity to fulfill the requirements of these branches, with the former Nottingham gun factory being brought back into service to meet demand.

The parliamentary session also touched upon labor issues, with a meeting chaired by the Prime Minister addressing unemployment. Proposed solutions included immediate funding for employment offices in major cities, the establishment of unemployment funds supported by the state, municipalities, and employers, and efforts to combat rural depopulation by developing the country's productive resources. The proposals also suggested stimulating emigration and imposing special taxes on inheritances and salaries exceeding 10,000 drachmas.
