Ukraine Appoints New Army Chief Amidst Military Shake-up

President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has appointed Lieutenant General Mykhailo Drapaty as the new Commander-in-Chief of Ukraine's Armed Forces, signaling a strategic shift in the nation's defense as the war with Russia enters its fifth year. The 43-year-old Drapaty succeeds 60-year-old General Oleksandr Syrskyi, who was dismissed by Zelenskyy amidst widespread protests.

The protests erupted following the removal of popular reformist Defense Minister Mykhailo Fedorov. Fedorov reportedly clashed with Syrskyi over efforts to reform the defense procurement system, which supporters claim faced internal resistance. Protesters demanded Syrskyi's removal instead of Fedorov's. Under mounting internal pressure, Zelenskyy ultimately chose to replace Syrskyi with a figure aligned with the dismissed defense minister.

Drapaty, previously the commander of the Joint Forces responsible for northeastern Ukraine's defense, is characterized by colleagues as a "new generation" general whose military career was forged in combat against Russian forces. Over 26 years of service, he rose through the ranks from tank platoon leader to become one of the Ukrainian army's most effective commanders, according to Reuters. In a rare public statement last week, he emphasized the need for changes and new operating rules within the Ukrainian military.

"I believe in the Armed Forces of Ukraine, which can learn, evolve technology, protect people, and allow commanders to take responsibility for the outcome," Drapaty wrote on Facebook, expressing support for the dismissed minister. He has fought Russian forces for over a decade, gaining prominence in 2014 during the Donbas conflict when he ordered an armored vehicle to charge a Russian checkpoint in Mariupol to rescue surrounded police officers. He also led a breakout from an encirclement in hostile territory that same year.

Since the full-scale Russian invasion in February 2022, Drapaty has repeatedly taken command in critical front-line sectors requiring immediate stabilization. In the summer of 2024, he thwarted a Russian advance near Kharkiv, stabilized the front line, and shortly thereafter assumed command of Ukraine's Ground Forces, becoming the youngest to hold such a position.
