Greek police arrest suspect in murder of British woman found in suitcase

Greek authorities have apprehended a suspect in the July murder of a British woman, whose body was discovered stuffed inside a travel suitcase in central Athens.

Police announced Sunday the arrest of a 26-year-old man, identified by media outlets as an Afghan citizen. According to a police statement, the suspect has "confessed to the act." The Directorate for Combating Organized Crime stated that they have "clarified the case of the murder of the 38-year-old citizen of the United Kingdom, whose body was found on July 18 in a suitcase in an abandoned building in the Kypseli district."

The suspect faces charges including intentional homicide, robbery, and firearms offenses. Media reports identified the victim as Elisabeth-Jane Rossi from Scotland. She had arrived in Greece on June 26 and was staying with a relative in Piraeus until July 10, after which she disappeared while traveling to an unknown location in the wider Athens area.

Authorities stated they determined the 26-year-old man placed the body in the suitcase and transported it to the abandoned property. They also reported that he subsequently used the victim's ATM cards to withdraw cash. Media reports indicate the suspect claims the woman was already deceased when he found her.
