Greek Police Detail Response to Korydallos Metro Station Incident, Highlight Security Plan Success

Greek police have issued a statement to clarify the handling of an incident at the Korydallos metro station on August 21, 2026, following media reports and a union announcement. The Hellenic Police (EL.AS.) stated that officers on duty under the "Ariadne" plan responded immediately to an attack on a station master, arresting the perpetrator despite the individual also assaulting the officers.

The statement also highlighted the effectiveness of the "Ariadne" plan, an integrated security initiative for Athens' public transport system. This plan involves visible and covert policing, patrols on stations and trains, and daily data assessment to deploy forces based on operational needs. A total of 410 officers are assigned to secure the networks of STASY (Athens Urban Transport Organization), Proastiakos (suburban railway), OSY (bus operator), and KTEL (intercity buses).

According to the police, the plan has yielded measurable results. From February 19, 2025, to June 30, 2026, there were 283,988 checks, 3,023 detentions, and 4,432 arrests. The plan also facilitated over 11,500 instances of assistance to ticket inspectors, 28,876 interventions for drug-addicted individuals, 1,938 interventions for begging incidents, 42 first aid provisions, and 211 instances of support for vulnerable individuals. An assessment in July indicated significant reductions: 70% fewer thefts and robberies against passengers, 80% fewer attacks on employees, 90% fewer damages to facilities and vehicles, and a 60% decrease in the presence of drug-addicted individuals.
