Greek Prime Minister Announces Upgrade of Greece-Lebanon Ties to Strategic Partnership

Greece is proposing a new strategic partnership with Lebanon, with Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis presenting the relationship as both a historic bond and a practical regional project.

Speaking after meeting Lebanese President Joseph Aoun in Athens, Mitsotakis said the visit confirmed the deep ties between the two peoples. He pledged that Greece would stand alongside Lebanon and support its sovereignty, independence and unity. He also highlighted the protection of Lebanon’s multicultural character and Christian communities.

Mitsotakis argued that a strong state and a central administration capable of protecting all citizens are necessary for a strong Lebanon. He expressed full support for Aoun’s decision to invest in diplomacy and direct dialogue with Israel through U.S. mediation, saying Greece was ready to support efforts to reduce tensions.

The Greek prime minister said Lebanon would remain high on both the Greek and European agendas. He referred to the European Union’s intention to begin procedures for a partnership with Lebanon and said Greece would seek to start related discussions during its presidency of the bloc. He also described Lebanon’s armed forces as a central pillar of the country’s security.

Greece’s support, Mitsotakis said, would extend beyond words. He said Greek armed forces were standing with Lebanon and that Greece was prepared to provide further support. He added that Greece wanted to contribute to Lebanon’s reconstruction, attract investment and strengthen trade.

The broader vision he outlined was an Eastern Mediterranean transformed from a region of tensions into one of peaceful cooperation and connectivity. Energy bridges and shared infrastructure, he said, could link countries across the region with Europe, while Lebanon should retain a central place in decisions made by its own institutions in the interests of its people.
