Greek prime minister rules out snap election, says vote will be held in spring 2027

Greek Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis has rejected speculation about an early election, saying the country will vote as scheduled in spring 2027. His statement came a day after he announced a package of tax cuts and pay increases worth 3.5 billion euros.

“Elections will be held in spring 2027,” Mitsotakis told reporters, dismissing reports that his government might call a snap vote this year. He said he believed his New Democracy party could win an outright majority and secure a third consecutive four-year term.

The centre-right government won re-election in 2023 with 40.5% of the vote after promising to raise incomes. Its support has since fallen below 30% in opinion polls, Reuters reported, amid a prolonged cost-of-living crisis and corruption allegations.

The measures announced by Mitsotakis include income-tax relief and salary increases that will be introduced over the next four years. The package amounts to 1.5% of Greece’s gross domestic product.

The plan includes an annual 400-euro bonus for pensioners and a 500-euro bonus for public servants. It also sets a zero income-tax rate for annual earnings of up to 20,000 euros for farmers and families with three children. Advance tax payments for businesses and self-employed people would gradually fall to 50%.

Mitsotakis also pledged to reduce unemployment to 6% and bring public debt below 110% of GDP by 2030.
