Greek Schools to Hire 29,948 Substitute Teachers for 2026-27

Greece’s Education Ministry has hired 29,948 substitute teachers and specialist staff for the 2026-27 school year, covering both special and general education.

The ministry said 23,162 appointments involve primary and secondary school teachers. Another 6,786 positions involve specialist education personnel and specialist support staff, while 142 teachers will work at public Onassis schools.

In primary education, the appointments include 11,502 teachers in special education and 4,121 in general education. In secondary education, the ministry hired 3,048 special education teachers, 4,109 general education teachers, 200 music specialists for music schools and 142 teachers for public Onassis schools.

Thirty-five positions remained unfilled. Of those, 34 concerned special education posts requiring certified proficiency in Braille or Greek Sign Language, because there were not enough candidates. The ministry also allocated 40 temporary secondary-education substitute positions to the Sivitanidios Public School of Arts and Professions.

The specialist education and support staff will be assigned to special education schools, parallel educational support programs, interdisciplinary assessment and support centers, and educational support networks operating through those centers. The ministry said 108 candidates could not be found for an equal number of positions. One additional substitute was hired for specialized educational support at an ecclesiastical school. Appointees must report for duty from Monday, Sept. 7, through Tuesday, Sept. 8, 2026.
