Greek summer sales stall as consumer spending power wanes

Summer sales in Greece are struggling, with a significant majority of businesses reporting decreased turnover. A survey by the Piraeus Merchants Association revealed that 55% of member businesses saw their sales drop in the first month of the summer sales period compared to last year. Another 33% reported sales remaining at the same level, while only 12% experienced an increase. The sluggish market is largely attributed to consumers' reduced purchasing power, with 73% of businesses identifying this as the main reason. Increased competition from international online platforms and e-commerce also emerged as a significant factor. Despite efforts by businesses to attract customers with discounts and quality services, overall consumption remains hampered by the financial pressures faced by Greek households. Local businesses are demonstrating resilience and responsibility, investing in quality, services, and genuine offers to support the local economy and employment. However, the sustained period of limited consumption, rising operating costs, and shrinking profit margins is testing the endurance of thousands of family-run enterprises. The association is calling on consumers to support local shops, emphasizing that each purchase contributes to the local economy and job security. The government is urged to continue initiatives that strengthen citizens' disposable income and implement measures to lower operational costs for small and medium-sized businesses, recognizing that boosting consumption is vital for the sustainability of Greek commerce and overall economic growth.
