Grêmio signs Cabo Verde World Cup star Jovane Cabral

Grêmio, a storied Brazilian football club, has announced the signing of Jovane Cabral, a prominent forward for Cabo Verde who recently competed in the 2026 World Cup. The club celebrated the acquisition on social media, noting that Cabral is the first player from Cabo Verde to wear their jersey.

Cabral, 28, has agreed to a contract that extends through the end of the 2027 season. He was a starting player for the surprisingly resilient Cabo Verdean squad during the World Cup, featuring in matches against eventual finalists Spain and Argentina. His arrival adds a World Cup-experienced attacker to Grêmio's ranks.

The forward began his professional career in Sporting CP's youth system, eventually making his first-team debut in 2017. During his time in Portugal, he won multiple titles, including a league championship and several domestic cups. He later had loan spells at Italian clubs Lazio and Salernitana, as well as Olympiacos in Greece, before returning to his native country in 2024 to play for Estrela da Amadora.

Cabral now joins Grêmio, a club with three Copa Libertadores titles, which is currently facing a challenging period. The team is battling to avoid relegation from the top tier of the Brazilian Championship. However, they remain active in other competitions, aiming for the quarterfinals of the Copa do Brasil and preparing for the Copa Sudamericana playoffs.
