Greta Scarano uses Venice red carpet to draw attention to femicide

Greta Scarano turned a Venice Film Festival red-carpet appearance into a brief protest against violence against women and femicide.

Before photographers at the premiere of Andrea Pallaoro’s The Echo Chamber, Scarano arrived in a long red dress and red lipstick. She then drew a mark on her cheek and stretched out her hand in a gesture calling for an end to the violence.

Scarano is co-hosting this year’s opening and closing ceremonies with Nicolas Maupas. On the eve of the festival, she had also appeared at a photocall with a fan showing a slice of watermelon, whose colors have become a symbol of Palestinian resistance.

"As you know very well, I have always taken a position and I have never been afraid to do so publicly," Scarano said during a streamed discussion about her role in Venice. "Nothing has changed at all, even now that I hold this role. I do not believe I should be more cautious or less consistent with the positions I have always held."
