GRIB Jaya Rejects Claims of Fatal Beating During Jakarta Unrest

GRIB Jaya has rejected allegations that its members beat a mirror seller to death during unrest in Pejompongan, Central Jakarta. Police are investigating how Bambang Setiawan died after an unidentified group allegedly attacked him.

GRIB Jaya Secretary-General Zulfikar said the accusations were false and accused protesters of attacking Bambang. “Perhaps you have seen it on TikTok. Someone died after being beaten. It was not GRIB that beat him. It was the protesters,” he said in a video posted on Instagram.

Zulfikar said GRIB Jaya members had been present as Pam Swakarsa, or civilian security volunteers, to help disperse the crowd. He claimed they were deployed at a different location from where Bambang died and did not take part in violence. He said demonstrators threw cement stones at them and had prepared the stones in advance.

Police said officers found an unconscious man after securing the area. The medical and health unit took him to Mintohardjo Hospital, where he died during treatment. His body was later transferred to Kramat Jati Police Hospital for identification.

Bambang's son, Wisnu, said his father left home around 10 p.m. to turn off the lights at his shop, about 500 meters away. Videos circulating on social media allegedly show people linked to GRIB Jaya at the scene, but police have not announced a conclusion.
