Grindeanu Asks Government to Negotiate Delay for Coal Power Plant Closures: 'We Cannot Just Import and Line Some People's Pockets'

Sorin Grindeanu, president of the Social Democratic Party (PSD), has called on the Romanian government to negotiate with Brussels for a delay in closing the country's coal-fired power plants. Grindeanu expressed concern that Romania could face a shutdown of Reactor 2 at the Cernavodă nuclear power plant if the coal plants cease operations. He warned against agreements that would primarily enrich specific entities through increased energy imports, stating, "We cannot just import and stuff some people's pockets."

The PSD leader's appeal highlights the ongoing tension between Romania's energy security needs and European Union climate directives.
