Grindeanu attacks USR after European Commission seeks answers over ‘Fritz amendment’

Sorin Grindeanu launched an unusually fierce attack on USR after the European Commission formally asked Romania for clarifications about its new integrity law, particularly the provision known as the “Fritz amendment.”

In a Facebook post, the PSD leader accused USR of putting political interests ahead of Romania’s interests. He said the party had tried, through the Renew group in the European Parliament, to advance a resolution in the LIBE committee that questioned respect for the rule of law in Romania.

Grindeanu said the resolution could have reached the European Parliament’s plenary session, but ultimately failed. He credited the European Socialists with supporting Romania from the start and said the European People’s Party changed its position at the last moment. He claimed that arguments had countered what he called lies from USR and other right-wing opponents.

The PSD leader linked the dispute to Romania’s economic position, saying foreign investment had already fallen by 80% under Prime Minister Bolojan’s mandate. He argued that a resolution questioning the rule of law would have sent a damaging signal to foreign partners and harmed the country’s credibility.

Grindeanu accused USR of using Romania as a weapon in its political conflict and said Dominic Fritz did not represent Romania. He described Fritz as a politician convicted in a final court decision and ended by warning that PSD would fight what he called “these traitors” everywhere. He said their continued presence in power made life harder for Romanians, damaged the economy and attacked the justice system.
