USR senator George Ștefănache announces resignation in AI-assisted post

George Ștefănache, a USR senator from Galați, has resigned from the party and says he will serve for a period as an independent senator, unaffiliated with any political group. He announced the decision on Sept. 2 in a lengthy Facebook post explicitly marked “Content AI.”

His explanation centered on a question of personal integrity: “Can I preserve my integrity if I remain?” Ștefănache wrote that his personal path had diverged from that of the organization, arguing that his concerns were increasingly focused on people while the party's concerns had turned inward.

He drew a sharp distinction between the party's central leadership and its local structure in Galați. Although he said USR's central leadership remained intensely focused on its declared values, he argued that those values faded at the local level. He criticized what he called the local organization's “assumed” inactivity and said Galați needed local USR candidates who would do more than simply fill electoral lists.

I have resigned from USR. I will serve for a period as an independent senator, unaffiliated with any political group, continuing to represent the people of Galați in the Parliament of Romania, in full accordance with the oath I took.

Ștefănache also named several national figures, including Dominic Fritz, Diana Buzoianu, Oana Țoiu, Irineu Darău and Radu Miruță, while arguing that they would not stand for local offices in Galați. He said he could not accept stagnation after promising voters that he would improve their lives. His resignation, he wrote, represented loyalty to his values, his family and the people of Galați, as well as a continued commitment to opposing PSD influence in the county.
