Ground and Air Operations Deployed to Extinguish Fire in Bromo National Park

Emergency services have deployed both ground and air operations to combat a significant wildfire raging within the Bromo Tengger Semeru National Park in East Java, Indonesia. The Lumajang District Disaster Management Agency (BPBD) is leading the combined efforts, aiming to quickly contain the flames that have engulfed an area in Argosari Village, Senduro District.

Isnugroho, head of the Lumajang BPBD, detailed the multi-pronged strategy, which includes ground teams performing manual suppression and creating firebreaks, alongside aerial support. Drones and water-bombing helicopters are being utilized, with water sourced from Ranu Regulo Lake. The operation faces considerable hurdles, including the remoteness of water sources, challenging terrain, dry vegetation, and unpredictable wind shifts, all of which require careful consideration.

Firefighters are employing tactics such as clearing vegetation along alternative routes to prevent the fire's spread. Water-bombing missions were conducted on Friday and Saturday to suppress the blaze. Continuous monitoring remains crucial as fire behavior is heavily influenced by wind and local vegetation conditions. This response is a collaborative effort involving local fire management groups and support from provincial and district disaster agencies, as well as the Ministry of Environment.

The exact cause of the fire is currently under investigation by authorities. While the total area affected is still being assessed, the BPBD has issued a strong advisory for the public, visitors, and tourism operators. They are urged to adhere to the national park's closure regulations and refrain from any activities that could spark a fire. Prompt reporting of any hot spots or potential fire outbreaks is requested to ensure a swift response from emergency personnel.
