GTA 6 leaks: What do they mean?

Leaked gameplay footage of the highly anticipated Grand Theft Auto 6 (GTA 6) has surfaced online, casting a shadow over the game's upcoming launch. Developed by Rockstar Games for over a decade, the title is slated for release on November 19. The leaks, attributed to a hacker group identifying as "Cyberleek," began around August 19, with new videos reportedly appearing almost daily.

Despite the continuous stream of leaked content, Rockstar Games and its parent company, Take Two Interactive, have largely remained silent. However, Take Two Interactive has taken legal action in the United States, seeking user information from platforms like GitHub and Discord from accounts suspected of sharing "copyrighted material." This legal pursuit has resulted in the swift removal of much of the leaked GTA 6 footage and the closure of several accounts linked to the "Cyberleek" group.

Obbe Vermeij, a game developer who previously worked as technical director on GTA 3, Vice City, and San Andreas before leaving Rockstar in 2009, commented on the situation. He noted that despite Rockstar's significant growth, the number of leaks has been surprisingly low over the years. Vermeij praised the company's ability to maintain secrecy, calling it "incredible" and a long-standing part of their culture, which he believes enhances the excitement for launch day.

However, the leaks are not without their critics. Wesley Yin-Poole, IGN's news director, suggested that such disclosures could be "devastating" for the developers who have worked on GTA 6 for the past decade. The "Cyberleek" group, meanwhile, claims to advocate for players' interests, accusing Rockstar of anti-consumer practices, such as potentially not releasing a disc version of GTA 6. The game's pre-orders opened on June 24.
