Iranian hackers target UK power plant in unprecedented cyberattack

Iranian-linked cybercriminals have allegedly executed a sophisticated attack on a British power station, leaving the facility offline for four days. The incident, reported by The Telegraph, marks the first known instance of hackers disabling a power plant in the United Kingdom through a cyber assault.

The attack reportedly took place concurrently with a series of cyber incidents targeting water infrastructure across 12 U.S. states last month, which prompted concern from the White House. British officials have withheld the identity of the targeted power plant, citing security concerns. While the facility is described as relatively small, its restoration took four days.

Despite the disruption, the power plant's outage did not affect the UK's overall electricity supply or pose a significant risk to the national energy system. Following the incident, the UK's National Cyber Security Centre (NCSC), part of the Government Communications Headquarters (GCHQ), was informed. The government has since issued directives to energy companies, urging them to enhance their security measures.

This attack comes amid a backdrop of rising cyber threats. The NCSC had previously called on UK organizations to review their security protocols in March due to increasing cyber threats. In June, NCSC chief Richard Horne stated that the center had recorded over 200 attacks on critical national infrastructure in the past year. Tensions between the UK and Iran have also been escalating, particularly following Iran's threats against bases used for operations against its territory, prompting the UK to declare its readiness for self-defense.
