Guatemalan professional colleges call elections for Controller nomination commission

Guatemalan professional colleges are initiating elections to form the commission responsible for nominating candidates for the General Accounts Controller. This body holds significant power, as it will vet six potential candidates for the crucial oversight role.

The selection process is drawing public attention due to the commission's pivotal function in issuing the 'finiquito,' or clearance, for candidates participating in the 2027 General Elections. The Colegio de Economistas, Contadores Públicos y Auditores y Administradores de Empresas has scheduled its election for July 17, with voting centers in departmental capitals where at least 20 professionals practice.

Separately, the Colegio de Contadores Públicos y Auditores will elect its 11 representatives on August 6, 2026. The broader Commission for Postulation, tasked with selecting the six candidates for the 2026-2030 Contralor General de Cuentas term, comprises both professional representatives and deans from Public Accounting and Auditing faculties. A rector elected by the National Rectors' Forum will preside over the commission.

Public interest has also focused on the potential presidency of Walter Mazariegos within this structure. The Congress had previously called for the integration of this nominating commission on June 2.
