Gunmen ambush, kill two security operatives in Plateau

Gunmen ambushed a joint security patrol in Riyom Local Government Area of Plateau State early Tuesday, killing a police inspector and an Air Force corporal. The attackers also seized the service weapons of the deceased operatives.

The incident occurred around 5 a.m. along the Ganawuri–Sabon Gida Road. Four security personnel, drawn from two guard posts, had set up a temporary roadblock. As the team was returning to their duty stations, two operatives failed to arrive, prompting a search operation by other security forces.

During the search, the bodies of the missing inspector from the Nigeria Police Force and the corporal from the Nigerian Air Force were discovered. Their service weapons were missing. Community members confirmed the recovery of the bodies and the motorcycle used by the operatives.

Preliminary findings suggest the ambush took place in a volatile area, previously occupied by Fulani herders who had fled before reinforcements arrived. The attack site was also near a native settlement. In response, security agencies have intensified operations, including cordon-and-search activities in nearby communities, to apprehend the fleeing suspects and retrieve the stolen firearms.
