Gunmen attack four Plateau communities, kill two, burn houses

Fresh attacks on Berom communities in Plateau State, Nigeria, have left at least two people dead and one injured, with gunmen also setting houses ablaze in multiple locations. The violence, which occurred Tuesday night, targeted at least four areas including Gwa-Wereng Rim, Kyeng Village, Dorong, and Jol Village.

The Berom Youth Moulders-Association confirmed the fatalities. Bulus Mwagwong, known as Dikko, was killed in Gwa-Wereng Rim, while his cousin Yakubu sustained fatal injuries. In Kyeng Village, Stephen Dachollom Kaze, 47, was also killed. Residents reported that gunmen invaded Gwa-Wereng Rim, opening fire on inhabitants, while in Dorong, attackers set homes ablaze, causing widespread destruction and forcing people to flee.

At Jol Village, armed assailants reportedly engaged local vigilantes in a gun battle, escalating tensions in the area. The National President of the Berom Youth Moulders-Association, Dalyop Solomon Mwantiri, condemned the attacks, labeling them a "disturbing threat to the lives, livelihoods and safety of rural communities."

The association expressed deep concern over the increasing frequency of attacks on communities, particularly those reliant on farming. They have called upon security agencies to bolster their presence in vulnerable areas, intensify surveillance, and apprehend those responsible. The group also urged for the perpetrators to be brought to justice and appealed to the Plateau State Government for immediate assistance to the affected families and communities, especially those who lost loved ones and property.

They urged residents to remain vigilant and united, emphasizing the need for concerted efforts to prevent further violence and restore confidence among the community members.
